After dinner, and after we'd put our son to bed, Beth asked me if I'd made a song for the 20th. I said no I hadn't had time. Was I going to record one? I said no it was too late. I left the room but then I spun around and changed my mind and said yes actually I would!

I think it was an idea for a song. That's what made me change my mind. It was going to be something instrumental. There was a song that could be done, so I would make a song, even if what I made sounded completely different.

With my laptop on lap, and headphones on, I played with Ultrabeat in Logic. I'd never used it in a song before but there's this drum kit called "Drag and Drop Samples" and it's easy to drag in your own samples. Then I plugged in my MC-36 keyboard and recorded a bass part, two distorted parts for left and right channels and another part which I chopped out of the first half of the song. I slipped into the front room to quietly sing vocals into the laptop's built-in microphone and mixed everything through the headphones.

The lyrics are improvised. Of course they're vague and meaningless but now that I'm writing this I think, well yes definitely still vague, but maybe they're about that original idea for a song, that was lost and came out of nowhere, but was only needed for a moment.
